A shadowy professor who allegedly shared incriminating information on Hillary Clinton is dead under unknown circumstances, the Democrat National Committee announced in court filings.
“Joseph Mifsud, an elusive professor considered a missing link between President Trump’s election campaign and Russia, may have died during the course of being sought in connection with Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 race, attorneys for the Democratic National Committee claimed Friday,” The Washington Times reports.
The DNC sued Mifsud and others, claiming they were behind a Russian-sponsored hacking of the committee’s email systems.
“One of more than a dozen defendants named in a lawsuit filed by the DNC in April, Mr. Milfsud ‘is missing and may be deceased,’ attorneys for the committee wrote in a status report filed in Manhattan federal court,” the Times reports.
“The DNC’s counsel has attempted to serve Mifsud for months and has been unable to locate or contact him,” DNC spokeswoman Adrienne Watson tells The Hill. “In addition, public reports have said he has disappeared and hasn’t been seen for months.”
George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign adviser, recently sentenced to 14 days in prison for lying to the FBI during the course of their investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election, claims Mifsud contacted him during the campaign, telling him Russians “dirt” on Clinton including “thousands of emails.”
Misfud then introduced Papadopoulos through email to Ivan Timofeev, a Russian international affairs expert with ties to the Russian government. Misfud claimed to have spoken to the FBI in February of 2017 about that contact but has not been seen or heard from since Oct. 31, 2017.
