Immigration and Customs officials confirm the suspect in the attempted murder of Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller is an illegal immigrant from Haiti.
Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs identified the alleged shooter as 29-year-old Wisner Desmaret. Desmaret fired on Jobbers-Miller as the police officer struggled to restrain him after assaulting a group of men and stealing a cell phone from a car in a gas station parking lot.
Instead of immediate deportation, ICE confirmed that Desmaret will face charges from local authorities. Among those eight charges, is the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer – a possible life sentence.
NBC 2 explained how Desmaret evaded deportation for so long:
The Glades County Sheriff’s Office said that Desmaret was placed on an “ICE Hold” in December 2008. He was then released to ICE officials at the Krome facility in Miami.
Two years later, in a 2010 booking report, Desmaret was placed on another “ICE Hold,” this time in Lee County.
An ICE Hold does not mean automatic deportation.
ICE officials said they cannot comment on Desmaret’s case because it is an open investigation.
We can’t ignore the reality that if the legal apparatus buttressing the immigration system had worked as planned and if authorities had processed only one ICE hold properly, then a Florida police officer would not have nearly died at the hands of a criminal illegal immigrant.
