Democrats have spent weeks firing up their radical base with calls to abolish the nation’s immigration police, even going so far as to introduce legislation, as part of a plan to gin up fundraising and voter turnout.

But the last thing they wanted was to have to actually vote on it. So that’s what Republicans just did.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Thursday he would bring a bill to the floor written by Democrats that would end ICE in a year and farm out some of its functions to other parts of the government…

… Republican conservatives favor holding the vote because, they say, it would force Democrats to take a position on a proposal that has garnered significant opposition in the polls and is backed by a faction of the most politically safe and left-leaning lawmakers in their party…

… A smattering of elected Democrats have come out publicly in favor of abolishing ICE, among them Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.

With the midterm election just a few months away, conservatives are eager to corner the Democrats on the issue and show their divisions.

Holding a vote would force Democrats to either alienate their own base, or alienate most voters.

But, even worse for Democrats, if the vote is held and most Democrats vote against abolishing ICE, which is likely, it would kill the issue for the party’s liberal base with months to go until the election.

How can Democrats ask their base to donate money and volunteer to held abolish ICE if most Democrat members of Congress just voted against it?
