They pointed a gun at him, yet he’s the one facing the possibility of life behind bars.

Three criminals thought Jarrell Chaney had marijuana, so they attempted to rob the 31-year-old in Irving, Texas on Tuesday.

But the older, more powerful Chaney got the upper hand against the trio, wrestling a pistol from one suspect. He unloaded as they fled the scene.

Two of the aggressors, 18-year-old Ishmael Smithson and 19-year-old Theophilos Greer, later died at a local hospital.

And now Chaney finds himself in the Irving Jail facing murder charges.

KTVT-TV reports:

“I was like, it couldn’t be murder. Not here, not in this apartment. It was just really shocking,” says LaShandra Holt, a resident at the Irving apartment complex where it happened.

Especially, she says, because of the circumstances.

Police say three teens targeted Chaney for an armed robbery, believing he had marijuana. Before the robbery ever happened, there was a confrontation. Police say Chaney wrestled away a gun from a juvenile suspect and began shooting at the teens as they ran away Two of them, 18-year-old Ishmael Smithson and 19-year-old Theophilos Greer, later died.

“You’re going to do whatever you can to save your life. I don’t think it’s that fair,” says Holt.

While police currently do not believe Chaney’s actions were justified due to mitigating factors, the only gun involved was out of the hands of the suspects, how far the men were from Chaney, etc., they caution that the investigation is still in the preliminary stages. The final decision to proceed rests with the District Attorney.
