Howard Schultz, the chairman of Starbucks – who oversaw the company’s expansion from one store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market to more than 28,000 worldwide – has announced is will resign effective June 26.
His announcement and a carefully worded statement have sparked speculation about his political aspirations.
Schultz actively supported Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton during their presidential bids. Some anticipate that he will challenge Donald Trump in two years.
Per CNBC:
“I’ll be thinking about a range of options for myself, from philanthropy to public service, but I’m a long way from knowing what the future holds,” Schultz said in the memo.

Under Schultz’s leadership, the company’s stock has grown 21,000 percent since its initial public offering in 1992. Shares of the company were down 1 percent after hours on Monday.
However, Starbucks courted controversy when a Philadelphia store manager called the police on two black men waiting for their friend.
