West Virginia Senate candidate Don Blankenship intensified his attacks against Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, as polls show him falling behind his two opponents.

With barely a week until the Republican primary and early voting already underway, the coal baron revealed his startling nickname for Senator McConnell: “Cocaine Mitch.”

Blankenship’s referring to a 2014 article in the Nation, a progressive news magazine, describing how Colombian authorities once discovered drugs aboard a freighter owned by the family of McConnell’s wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

In a recent interview, Blankenship hinted that voters should be wary of McConnell’s high-profile connections in China.

McConnell’s sister-in-law is on the board of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, a subsidiary of China’s largest defense contractor.

While going after a career politician, like McConnell could pay off in a grassroots-oriented primary, the risk of alienating Donald Trump, by criticizing his Transportation Secretary has grown, too.

One month ago, the ex-coal CEO was locked in a heated three-way race with state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and Congressman Evan Jenkins.

Recent polling shows Blankenship fading into third place after an outside group with ties to the RNC spent heavily to undermine his candidacy.
