California Democrat Congresswoman Maxine Waters taunted President Donald Trump over revelations his attorney Michael Cohen may have taped conversations with friends, appearing to threaten to play the tapes in impeachment hearings.
“Trump & his backroom advisor Sean Hannity are bosom buddies — both getting advice from the “fixer” Michael Cohen. Can’t wait for the tell-all tapes. Get ready for impeachment!!,” Waters tweeted Thursday.
Cohen’s communications with clients were picked up in a search warrant obtained by federal agents investigating him for alleged bank and wire fraud.
There’s no confirmation Cohen taped conversations with Trump, and Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing by investigators in Cohen’s case. Federal prosecutors have publicly stated they have no emails between Cohen and Trump.
Based on the charges and materials seized, many observers suspect Trump is not a target of the investigation but may be a victim of fraud by Cohen. Prosecutors say Cohen did little to no legal work for Trump and may have entered Trump into legal agreements without Trump’s knowledge.
If true, the tapes may backfire on Waters, should Democrats seize control of the U.S. House in this year’s elections, and then hold impeachment hearings.
