New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy just signed an executive order on gun control – designed to shame gun sellers publicly.
The policy, nicknamed “Name and Shame,” will allow information about the origins of guns involved in crimes to be publicly accessible. According to state sources, about 80 percent of firearms used in crimes come from outside the state of New Jersey.
The order would direct the state to periodically publish data about where guns come from, which Murphy claimed was long overdue.
“Any death due to gun violence is one death too many,” Governor Murphy said, in a statement. “I am proud to stand with Attorney General Grewal, Colonel Callahan, and Acting Commissioner Repollet to announce a new tool that will allow residents to see how gun violence impacts their communities and gain a fuller understanding of how firearms are trafficked into New Jersey from other states.”
