In the midst of growing criticism for mishandling the alleged abuse of a female aide by her recently-fired chief of staff, Democratic Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty announced that she would not run for re-election come November.

Esty, an outspoken advocate of the #MeToo movement, admitted she “could have and should have done better,” after learning her top advisor, Tony Baker, punched a female staffer in her office who he had once dated.

The woman also provided a voicemail tape to The Washington Post where Baker allegedly says: “You better f—–g reply to me or I will f—–g kill you.”

Esty faced particularly withering criticisms after media reports revealed she kept Baker on staff for three months after not only finding out about these shocking accusations but learning they weren’t isolated incidents.

Ultimately, Esty dismissed Baker but not before he received a generous severance package and glowing recommendation that earned him a job at the gun control group Sandy Hook Promise.
