A pair of Democrat lawmakers introduced a bill to require background checks on ammunition purchase. Currently, Federal law requires all licensed dealers to conduct background checks on firearms purchases.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sen. Richard Blumenthal unveiled the bill standing alongside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students.
“Ammunition sales should be subject to the same legal requirements as firearm sales, and that includes instant background checks. … Closing this ludicrous loophole is a common-sense component of a comprehensive strategy to reduce gun violence,” Blumenthal said according to The Hill.
“Studies show it can help keep ‘bad guys with guns’ from perpetrating another mass slaughter like the one we witnessed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in my Broward County community, or the thousands of other acts of gun violence that devastate communities across the country,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.
Currently, only California and New York require background checks to buy ammunition. Four other states require ammunition buyers to have a permit which includes passing a background check.
While this policy may sound like a good idea, it has some significant drawbacks. For starters, it is a massive inconvenience for law-abiding gun owners.
“As a matter of convenience, no gun owner wants to fill out paperwork and wait everytime they want to pick up a few rounds before heading to the shooting range. Regardless of convenience, it also hurts the wallet, as every time a licensed firearms dealer runs a background check the person looking to make the purchase must pay for that background check.” writes Micah Rate at Bearing arms. “In the state of Florida, a background check costs $24. Tack that on to the price of the ammunition these days and that individual is looking to have themselves a pricey outing at the range. Many Second Amendment proponents would call that an undue burden on an individual who is trying to exercise their constitutional right.”
Also, most criminals often obtain their weapons illegally. After all, it is already a violation of Federal law for felons to get firearms and ammunition. What is to stop someone from purchasing ammunition, passing a background check, and reselling the ammo on the black market?
The goal of leftists is to end gun ownership. Some are more honest than others.
