Representative Louise Slaughter (D-NY), died after being hospitalized with a concussion from a fall at her Washington, D.C. home earlier this week.
The 88-year-old Democrat had represented the Rochester, New York area since 1987.
Slaughter made a lasting impact as the Chair of the House Rules Committee from 2007 to 2009. The Committee determines how bills reach the floor for a vote.
At the time of her death, she was the Committee’s ranking minority member.
The district she represented, New York’s 25th, went for Hillary Clinton with 55.5 percent of the vote. However, the result marked a noticeable shift towards Republicans from previous election cycles.
The date of a special election has yet to be declared.
