Stanford University has banned the College Republicans from putting their new logo on a t-shirt – because it shows a portion of the American flag.
In an email from Stanford’s administration to the College Republicans, Stanford’s trademark licensing associate Kara Hegwood wrote why she was rejecting the patriotic-looking logo:
“Stanford does not approve the use of the American (or another flag on a product also featuring our trademarks (including the Stanford name),” Hegwood wrote.
“We can approve red/white/blue themed product but cannot approve this design which features an altered version of the flag in the background of the design, and within the initials for the organization name. I note you feature a different design on your website – we would be able to approve that design on product.”
However, according to the College Fix, which first broke the story, Stanford’s lengthy trademark guide doesn’t mention that flags are not allowed on school paraphernalia.
John Rice-Cameron, a financial officer for the College Republicans, said he’d emailed Hegwood, demanding to know why Stanford refuses to associate itself with the American flag.
“The logo is emblematic of our club,” he told the College Fix. “It shows we are willing to boldly promote conservatism.”
