A Democrat running for Congress in Virginia Beach wants new gun laws, but she doesn’t understand the laws currently on the books.
After a campaign video gone wrong, Democrat Karen Mallard, who is challenging Republican Rep. Scott Taylor, has found herself the target of a federal investigation for illegally altering an AR-15.
In a video posted to Facebook, Mallard introduces herself, and then explains, “I grew up in Wise County, surrounded by guns. Our family had guns my whole life. We use them for hunting, for protection, and recreation.”
“A while back, my husband bought this AR-15,” she continued. “I wasn’t happy about it, and after [the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School], I told him I wanted this gun out of my house. And he agreed with me.”
She extrapolated after seeing a speech from one of the survivors of the shooting, she and her husband decided not just to sell the AR-15 – but that they “didn’t want this gun in anyone else’s house either.”
“So today, we’re going to destroy it,” Mallard announced to the camera.
Mallard then took out an electric saw and proceeded to saw the barrel off the gun.
However, by doing that, Mallard was in violation of the Sawed-Off Shotgun and Sawed-Off Rifle Act.
Mallard has since turned over the remnants of the AR-15 to the Virginia Beach Police Department. An officer from the VBPD has confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is now investigating the situation, to determine whether or not Mallard broke federal law by illegally altering the AR-15.
