It’s official: President Donald Trump is running for re-election in 2020.
The Drudge Report first broke the announcement earlier today. An official statement from the White House will follow later this week.
With 980 days before Election Day 2020, Trump will set a new record for the most prolonged campaign for a sitting president – shattering Obama’s re-election announcement, which came 582 days before the 2012 election.
Trump has also announced that his re-election campaign will be led by Brad Parscale, who served as the digital director for his 2016 effort.
Parscale, apparently, will also be leading a coordinated effort to engage Trump supporters in strategic districts and states during the 2018 Midterms, to bolster the Republican majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The timing of Trump’s announcement – coming before even the 2018 midterm elections – is surprising, but the fact that he’s running again isn’t.
Trump has repeatedly talked about being President for eight years, and he filed preliminary paperwork for a 2020 run with the Federal Elections Commission way back in January 2017 – mere days after his inauguration.
It was also confirmed, unofficially, by White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders back in June 2017, when she told reporters: “Of course, he’s running for re-election.”
