While the abject failure of law enforcement to follow-up on dozens of potentially life-saving tips before last week’s Florida school shooting cannot fall on any one individual or agency, you’d expect the FBI to be on its A game.
Unfortunately, nothing could have been further from the truth.
Multiple good Samaritans warned agents in the months leading up to the February 14 massacre.
First, agents received a warning about Cruz after he posted ominous comments on YouTube saying that he aspired to become a “professional school shooter.”
Then, “a person close to” Cruz called the FBI’s tip line on January 5 and reported the 19-year-old’s “desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts” adding that there was “potential of him conducting a school shooting,” the FBI acknowledged.
Unfortunately, the agency admitted in a damning press release that it failed to relay that information to its local field office, even though its protocols say agents should have assessed and investigated Cruz immediately.
Instead, the tip went nowhere. A little over a month later, Cruz murdered 17 people at his former high school.
