The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll could be the most surprising survey of 2018: Republicans have not only erased the Democrats’ one-time double-digit advantage in generic congressional polling – but are now in the lead.
In the latest POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, 39 percent of registered voters say they would support a Republican candidate for Congress in their district, while 38 percent said they would back the Democrat. One-quarter are undecided.
Two months ago, most polls had the Democrats up by double-digits – including a CNN poll from December 17, which had Democrats on top by a whopping 18 points, signaling a supposedly inevitable wave election.
But better economic news since then – including a flurry of positive energy and attention on the Republican-backed tax reform legislation – and the Democrats failed government shutdown has led to a catastrophic collapse of the party. So much that, the Trump-led GOP has regained the initiative.
