House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gave an eight-hour speech about illegal immigration on Wednesday – and now, her Democratic colleagues are panicking.
Politico interviewed nearly a dozen House Democrats, who spoke anonymously to their reporters about how livid they are about Pelosi’s stunt – thinking that it’ll cost them prominent during the 2018 election.
“This stunt… had nothing to do with protecting vulnerable members who have to take a difficult vote,” complained a moderate Democratic member of Congress. “Working out this deal and then saying she’s not going to vote for it? Come on. She was at the table.”
Another House Democrat, interviewed by Bloomberg anonymously, echoed that grave concern, saying, “Many of our members are furious. We have spent the last three weeks insisting that we don’t want to shut the government down over DACA, and she essentially made the whole thing about it. Virtually everyone trying to win seats outside of California feels she has hurt their chances.”
Pelosi’s speech, where she threatened to potentially shut the government down again if Republicans didn’t pass the so-called DREAM Act that would give legal status to more than a million illegal immigrants, drew praise from the far-left. But, considering how hostile the American people were last month when the government shut down – for the same exact reasons – and how a large plurality blamed the Democrats, Pelosi’s stunt could keep the House of Representatives solidly in Republican hands this November.
