In the people’s House of Representatives, there are just certain things you don’t do. Like mixing campaign emails with House emails.
Tell that to New Jersey Democrat Rep. Josh Gottheimer, whose staffer blasted out an email boasting of fundraising from his House email address. That’s a big no-no.
“This is a troubling misuse of taxpayer dollars that deserves more scrutiny,” said Chris Martin, spokesman for the National Republican Campaign Committee. “It’s one of those clear lines,” said Meredith McGehee, a government ethics expert. “It’s the line you don’t cross.”
Abhi Rahman, Gottheimer’s communications director, is the alleged sender of the email. Someone with that position’s level of seniority is quite likely to be aware of the rules, begging the question, was she just following orders from the top? Did the Congressman force her hand to break the House Ethics Code?
