Fake news: a liberal buzzword or the Devil’s handiwork?
Pope Francis thinks it’s the Devil’s doing.
The left-leaning head of the Catholic Church slammed fake news on Wednesday, claiming that it “risks turning people into unwilling accomplices in spreading biased and baseless ideas.” He added that “fake news is a sign of intolerant and hypersensitive attitudes, and leads only to the spread of arrogance and hatred. That is the end result of untruth.”
Francis then went on to describe how fake news is what, ultimately, caused God to banish Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
“This was the strategy employed by the ‘crafty serpent’ in the Book of Genesis, who, at the dawn of humanity, created the first fake news which began the tragic history of human sin,” the pontiff explained. “By listening to the deceiver and letting herself be taken in by his version of the facts, the woman is misled.”
Francis added that Eve’s sin is passive: she was wrong for “listening” to Satan and “letting herself” be misled.
But he also stressed that journalists have a responsibility to be “protectors of news” – calling it “not just a job, [but] a mission.”
“We need to unmask what could be called the ‘snake-tactics’ used by those who disguise themselves in order to strike at any time and place,” he said.
