The American people are solidly in favor of President Trump’s immigration proposals, according to a surprising new poll.
Nearly 8 in 10 Americans agreed that the U.S. needs secure borders, showing the depth of support for Trump’s push for enhanced border security. A clear majority, 54 percent, explicitly support “building a combination of physical and electronic barriers across the U.S.-Mexico border” – in essence, what Trump has proposed.
Seventy-nine percent Americans also favor merit-based immigration over family-based immigration, another Republican talking point. President Trump has made ending so-called chain migration a top priority.
Additionally, 68 percent of Americans oppose the government’s “diversity lottery” that randomly selects 50,000 people per year for entry into the United States.
Also, 72 percent of Americans thought the number of immigrants allowed into the country should be lower. In 2016, the United States accepted nearly 1.2 million new legal permanent residents, but three-quarters of Americans selected a number under 1 million as the ideal number of immigrants granted entry per year.
With the government reopened after a 69-hour shutdown, the immigration debate has begun in earnest. Congress is up against the clock: on February 8, the current federal budget will expire, threatening another shutdown, and on March 4, the Obama-era DACA plan will expire, unless Congress takes action.
