CNN anchor Don Lemon had a meltdown on the air – after Martin Luther King Jr.’s nephew refused to call President Donald Trump a racist.
Isaac Newton Farris Jr., King’s nephew, went on Lemon’s show late on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day to discuss Trump’s alleged comments about “sh*thole countries” like predominately-black Haiti.
Farris, who has met with Trump in the past, said that he didn’t believe the President is a racist, but “misinformed” about Haiti.
“I don’t think that President Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country,” Farris said. “I think President Trump is racially ignorant or racially uninformed. But I don’t think that he’s a racist in the traditional sense.”
Lemon was outraged that Farris refused to call Trump a racist and his meltdown was described even by liberal news sites as a complete trainwreck.
“Isaac, he’s the president, he has an obligation to be informed,” Lemon ranted, before bringing up a list of Trump’s allegedly racial statements.
He then asked Farris: “How much more evidence do you need?”
After Farris praised Trump’s political skills – calling him a “genius” for tapping into white Americans aversion to identity politics – Lemon had enough, demanding to know why Farris was making excuses for Trump.
Lemon then went on an extended rant: “Just because the president is not aware of his racism doesn’t make him not a racist. It makes him ignorant of the fact that he is racist. To be honest, it is tough to sit here and call President of the United States a liar. It is tough to sit here and call the President of the United States a racist, but you have to do that as a journalist. And guess what? You do it because you realize the person who is in that position has less respect for the office than you do, because if he respected the office and if he respected all of America and all of American people then he would listen to the majority of black people and brown people in this country who are trying to educate him and tell him he is exhibiting racist behavior. He’s not listening. He keeps doubling down on it.”
