An illegal immigrant on trial for the murder of two cops is unapologetic – even wishing he had killed more!
Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes, 37, is on trial for the 2014 murder of two Northern California police officers: Sacramento Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer, Calif., Detective Michael Davis, Jr., during a daylong killing spree.
As the prosecutor in the case began to describe the events leading to Oliver’s death, Bracamontes interrupted the court by smiling and giggling. Bracamontes then called Oliver’s police partner, Deputy Scott Brown, a “coward,” and launched into a vicious rant.
“I wish I had killed more of the motherf***ers,” he said. “I will break out soon, and I will kill more, kill whoever gets in front of me … There’s no need for a f***ing trial.”
Superior Court Judge Steve White quickly removed the jury and admonished Bracamontes, telling him that he would be “removed from the courtroom” if he didn’t behave.
But Bracamontes’s horrifying behavior might bolster the case his public defender, Jeffrey Barbour, wants to make: That Bracamontes is insane.
“Let me be clear and up front,” Barbour had told the jury. “Mr. Bracamontes is responsible for the death of Deputy Danny Oliver and Detective Michael Davis. He shot them both.”
He added: “We believe Mr. Bracamontes’ outbursts, his laughter, are a function of his mental illness.” Barbour also asked if they could enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Judge White refused, noting that the insanity plea had already been thrown out in previous hearings.
“He is not incompetent to stand trial,” White said.
If convicted, Bracamontes could face the death penalty.
