Don’t get too merry this Christmas: police are now warning that kissing someone under the mistletoe could be considered “rape.”
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), in the United Kingdom, tweeted to their 159,000 followers: “If you bump into that special someone under the mistletoe tonight, remember that without consent it is rape #SeasonsGreetings.”
The hysteria received a swift backlash from the PSNI’s followers – most of it negative – with one Twitter user claiming that it showed a “warped view of the world” by comparing a festive kiss at a Christmas party to rape.
Another user added, “This tweet tells people that a kiss is rape. Do you realize what you’ve said?”
The PSNI later deleted their tweet, but refused to apologize. Instead, they doubled down: “We posted a message on Twitter yesterday that some may have taken out of context, but the message remains the same; when you are out socializing over the Christmas period, please remember without consent it is rape.”
