James Hodgkinson, a left-wing activist, targeted Republican members of Congress practicing for the annual congressional baseball game early in the morning on June 14, 2017. For ten minutes, he rained lead on Republican officials and staffers. Fortunately, Majority Whip Steve Scalise had a security detail. Three Capitol Police officers kept Hodgkinson’s pinned down, preventing him from advancing on the unarmed victims, trapped by a twenty-foot-high fence. Many witnesses said that without the presence of armed guards, the shooting would’ve become a massacre.
