Melania Trump is doing the job of the First Lady much cheaper than her predecessor, Michelle Obama.
Fox News announced, after viewing White House personnel reports, that Mrs. Trump has slashed the budget for the First Lady’s office—saving taxpayers nearly $1 million per year.
During her husband’s first year in office, Mrs. Obama had a staff of 16 people, whose salary totaled $1.24 million annually.
This year, however, Melania Trump has just a quarter of the staff, who make a combined $486,700.
Including additional White House staffers who do work for the First Lady, but don’t necessarily have “First Lady” in their titles, Michelle Obama had 24 employees. Michelle Obama also set a record as having the largest staff of any First Lady in history.
According to Mrs. Trump’s office, the leaner staff—and significantly reduced budget—is intentional.
“As with all things that she does, she is being very deliberate in her hiring, focusing on quality over quantity,” said Mrs. Trump’s communications director Stephanie Grisham. “It is important to her that the team is a good fit for what she wants to accomplish as First Lady, and that everyone works well together. She also wants to be mindful and responsible when it comes to taxpayer money.”
