Gang violence in Chicago continues to rage out of control. Last Friday, a middle school math teacher was gunned down outside her home in Chicago’s upscale Rogers Park neighborhood.
Cynthia Trevillion, 64, taught at the private Chicago Waldorf School. Her husband, John, also works at the school, which costs nearly $20,000 per year for middle school tuition.
On Friday night, the Trevillions, who are both white, were walking from their house in Rogers Park to the nearby “L” train station.
As they walked, the crossfire of a drive-by shooting peppered the street around them. Cynthia was hit in the head and neck and collapsed next to her husband of 29 years. She was pronounced dead shortly after at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois.
“She was an extremely generous soul,” John Trevillion told local news channel ABC7. “She radiates warmth and empathy to all who know her. She has many, many friendships.”
Residents were devastated by the death of a beloved teacher, setting up a makeshift shrine to Trevillion near the scene of the crime. But the tragedy also left many fearing for the safety of their neighborhood—as Rogers Park is a lake-front, plurality-white, highly-educated enclave on Chicago’s northernmost edge, which has avoided much of the violence that plagues the city.
No suspects have yet been identified. Police are currently checking local businesses near the shooting scene in hopes of retrieving surveillance video that could help identify Cynthia Trevillion’s killer.
