A migrant from Ghana stole over $3.5 million from a Bronx church and Villanova University, according to the New York State Attorney General’s office.
Anthony Nyame, who lives in the Bronx, worked on Wall Street—when he convinced members of First Ghana Seventh Day Adventist Church to invest nearly a million dollars with him.
In a different scheme, Nyame also managed to steal $2.7 million from the Catholic Villanova University, by masquerading as a vendor through a fake email.
“It is simply appalling that anyone would choose to fleece universities and churches to line their own pockets,” said New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. “New Yorkers deserve to know that when they seek to grow their organizations, there isn’t a fraudster lurking in the shadows.”
Nyame used the ill-gotten cash for personal expenses—including $47,000 to pay for a luxury Wall Street apartment.
Nyame faces three to nine years in prison—but, if he agrees to pay $800,000 in restitution, he will serve just one year in jail.
