LANSING — The director of the Michigan State Police found herself at the center of the raging debate over pre-game protests by NFL players Wednesday after she posted a meme to her Facebook page that condemned, in highly charged language, players who kneel or sit for the national anthem.

There were widespread calls for Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue to resign or be fired, talk of demonstrations in Detroit and Lansing, and one group on Wednesday called for all Michigan State Police troopers to be pulled out of Detroit.

But other voices insisted that Etue’s free speech rights — not just those of protesters — must be defended.

Etue apologized — once to the public on social media and separately to state police employees in an e-mailed message — and vowed to keep working.
