Kentucky’s Transylvania University dismissed a Trump-supporting undergrad—for drawing attention to another student’s illegal immigration status and urging others to report her to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The student, Taylor Ragg, targeted his classmate Paolo Garcia, who is in the United States illegally from Mexico. Garcia is a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and had been heavily criticizing President Donald Trump.
According to Ragg, Garcia had openly bragged about her illegal status. When she described herself, in a Facebook post, as “undocumented, unapologetic and unafraid,” Ragg alerted others to her social media post—urging people to “report this illegal.”
After Garcia complained to the university that Ragg had been “threatening” her, the college’s administration stepped in—and sided with Garcia over Ragg.
“I invited both of the students to meet with me this morning to discuss the uses and impact of social media and ways we might move forward,” explained Seamus Carey, president of Transylvania University. “The student who posted to the white supremacist website has been in contact with our office but has yet to accept the invitation.”
Ragg denies that he posted anything to a “white supremacist website” and is obtaining legal counsel to hold the school responsible for what he considers libel.
But, in the meantime, Ragg’s actions have gotten him kicked off campus, with a school spokesperson explaining that Rsagg had “left campus following a grievance process performed by school administrators.”
