Mitt Romney says he consulted former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about the prospect of being nominated the Trump administration’s top diplomat.
At his annual summit in Park City, Utah, on Friday, Romney reportedly said he spoke to Clinton about the job, and was even encouraged to take it by her, if offered the opportunity.
Late last year Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, had been one of the top contenders to be President Trump’s secretary of state. The two met and even dined together. In mid-December Romney confirmed he wouldn’t be Trump’s pick. That honor went to former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, who is now secretary of state.
Romney said it was Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Mike Pence, who gave him a call to say he was in the running for the top State Department position.
