No way to sugarcoat this: according to a new poll, the majority of Americans hate the Democratic Party—and their popularity is trending downwards, not upwards.
Pew Research showed that 51% of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party. Just 45% have a favorable view.
Worse for them, between Trump’s inauguration and now, their numbers have been slipping, not improving. Back in January, the numbers were flipped: 51% of Americans had a favorable view of Democrats, and 45% did not.
Surprisingly, much of their new, increased unpopularity is coming from the left. Just 70% of self-identified Democrats and independents who lean Democrat approve of the party. Shortly before the 2016 election, when it looked like Hillary Clinton was going to be the 45th President of the United States, 87% of liberals liked their party.
The Democratic Party has been criticized recently for being out of ideas—rather than create a positive vision for the future of the country, they’ve been pushing “resistance” to Donald Trump. Their lack of direction has resulted in a few costly blunders—the seemingly-pointless filibuster of Justice Neil Gorsuch, and special election losses in Kansas and Georgia.
Liberals haven’t been shy about expressing their dissatisfaction with Democratic Party leadership, either. On Monday night, during the DNC’s new “unity tour” to heal the intra-party divide between Hillary Clinton’s supporters and Bernie Sanders’s supporters, DNC chair Tom Perez was booed by the audience.
However, the Democrats can take solace that, despite being hated by most Americans, they’re slightly more popular than the Republican Party. 57% of Americans have an unfavorable view of the GOP.
