Democratic pollster and longtime Clinton ally Doug Schoen revealed on Sunday that he is no longer supporting Hillary Clinton for the nation’s highest office.
Schoen told Fox News host Harris Faulkner that he decided to reconsider his support of Clinton due to the ongoing FBI investigation into her private email use while serving as secretary of state.
“As you know, I have been a supporter of Secretary Clinton,” he said. “But if the secretary of state wins, we will have a president under criminal investigation, with Huma Abedin under criminal investigation, with the secretary of state, the president-elect, should she win, under investigation.”
When Schoen confirmed he is “actively reassessing” his support for Clinton, Faulkner reacted in shock.
This is big. Schoen is not exactly a doctrinaire Democrat, and he’s been moderately critical of Hillary throughout this cycle. Still, that criticism has been constructive, with an eye towards helping the candidate find a centrist path to the Oval Office. Schoen has experience with that project: He’s worked for both of the Clintons off and on for over twenty years. It’s safe to say that over those twenty years, he’s remained loyal despite scandal after scandal. If this latest investigation shook his confidence, then it must be really bad.
