New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio shut down two under-14 Little League games in Harlem for more than an hour—because he needed to land his helicopter in Harlem River Park.
However, de Blasio’s helicopter never actually landed—after a group of angry parents threatened to photograph the helicopter and report the story to the media.
One dad, who didn’t want his name reported in the media for fear of retribution, said the cops “basically told everyone to get off the field” because “the mayor wants to land his helicopter here.”
“It’s ridiculous,” the dad added. “The guy feels he’s so entitled to do whatever he wants.”
The cops, however, seemed to sympathize with the parents and the Little Leaguers—not the liberal New York mayor. The dad reported that the cops told him that it was “absolutely ridiculous” and that he should file a complaint with the city. One cop told the media anonymously that they “were not happy” at having to cancel the games.
De Blasio was en route to the official mayoral residence, Gracie Manor, after visiting an injured firefighter in the Bronx. He took the helicopter because of backed-up traffic.
Reports of the controversial helicopter ride comes on the back of a similar incident two weeks ago, where de Blasio landed his helicopter in Prospect Park. De Blasio has also been under fire for using a police helicopter to fly him and his wife to September’s presidential debate on Long Island.
The NYPD has refused to answer questions about de Blasio’s controversial helicopter flight, stating, “We do not discuss the specifics of security.”
