This week, Democrats raised a total non-issue: the legal status of Donald Trump’s wife, Melania. It was a shameless ploy to obfuscate Trump’s position on immigration, and it fell flat with the American public.
This morning, Democratic Rep Xavier Becerra tried to raise the issue with top Trump advisor Newt Gingrich. Needless to say, Becerra got more than he bargained for:
Gingrich took issue with Becerra questioning how Donald Trump’s wife gained her immigration status.
“First of all, we know that [Trump’s] wife had a green card before she met him. [Melania] came here legally –” he said before being interrupted by Becerra.
“How did she get the green card?” the California congressman asked.
“She applied for the green card, she didn’t know Donald Trump,” Gingrich retorted.
“This is the only immigrant in america you’re worried about,” he said. “I think it’s amazing the one person you decide to pick on happens to the the wife of Donald Trump.”
Gingrich’s description of the Democrat’s policy on immigration is absolutely perfect, and should be noted by voters. At some point, the party decided to sell out their working class base and adopt the position that any and all opposition to open borders is racist.
This is a totally unreasonable argument that disregards decades of liberal economic arguments, and it’s forced Democrats to adopt a totally incoherent platform. The modern Democratic party is opposed to President Obama’s Trans Pacific Partnership because it harms American workers, but supports an open borders policy that introduces far more wage competition for those beleaguered American workers. In their rush to slander Republicans, they’ve implicitly argued that any and all opposition to borders of any sort is racist.
This is of course, totally absurd. Millions of low skilled Americans worry about competition from illegal immigrants. Millions more worry about the wisdom of an open borders policy as terrorist attacks consume Europe.
And the Democrats aren’t worried about any of that. They’re worried about Melania Trump. As the Donald would say: “sad!”
