Bearing Arms reports that the number of Federal Agents with fiream and arrest authority has now outpaced the total number of US Marines, including non-combat troops. In particular, there are 15,000 contract federal security officers and 30,000 agents not part of the Department of Justice or Homeland Security, the traditional law enforcement departments. This doesn’t include the 55,000+ Transportation and Safety Administration officers, who perform security check (quite inadequately for the most part) without being sworn agents.
This report reveals two distrubing trends: first, the Obama Administration has continued to cut down numbers in the military, especially in the Marine Corps. Our premier expeditionary force, critical to deal with global stability missions, cannot fulfill those missions with smaller numbers.
Second, and perhaps even more frightening, this reveals that the US Government is centralizing power away from the States and the People to an even greater extent. A full quarter of federal agents are not administered under agencies that deal with National Security like the FBI, DEA or DHS. Instead, these agents report to non-law enforcement agencies like the Internal Revenue Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the Department of Health and Human Services. What purpose do these agents serve, if not to act like Obama’s private army? It has been proven that the IRS and BLM have targeted conservatives, and DHHS is notorious for being full of liberal government workers. Yesterday, the Libertarian Republic reported that the IRS spent $11 million on guns and ammo. Why would a tax collecting agency need this kind of gear?
While Democrats in Congress are trying to grab guns from law abiding citizens, they should be looking at the militarization of non-law enforcement agencies in the Federal Government. This is one more step in the direction of tyranny.
