A poll released Monday suggests former Gov. Mitt Romney’s high-profile speech last week condemning Donald Trump and calling on Republicans to unite against him only served to increase enthusiasm for Trump’s candidacy.

In a speech delivered at the University of Utah, Romney denounced Trump as a “phony” and a “fraud” who is “playing members of the American public for suckers.” Romney called on Republican voters to rally behind whichever candidate is Trump’s biggest threat in a particular state, apparently in the hopes of forcing a brokered Republican convention.

The vast majority of Republicans are either ignoring or openly defying Romney’s advice, according to the poll.

Conducted by Morning Consult, the poll found that 31 percent of Republican voters were more likely to support Trump after Romney’s speech, while only 20 percent were less likely. Forty-three percent said Romney’s speech made no difference.
