For months, we’ve heard about how screwed up the Republican Party is. Lamestream media types panicked at the rise of Donald Trump and political neophytes like Ben Carson were predicting that the Tea Party would tear the party apart. Instead, the will of the grassroots has forced the party into substantive discussions on immigration, trade policy, and faith. Which ever candidate emerges from the right will be battle tested and ready to face off against the Democratic nominee in the general election.
The real mess is on the Left. In an effort to hand the nomination to Hillary Clinton, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz scheduled debates on nights when she thought no one would be watching. While a wooden Hillary Clinton gave speeches to carefully chosen audiences, wacky old socialist Bernie Sanders swept the country, promising free things to the spoiled and lazy millennials who swept Barack Obama into office. And it worked. Sanders lost Iowa to Clinton on the basis of a series of coin flips. He got the media to ask tough questions about Hillary’s relationship with Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs. He’s outraised Hillary in January, and he has a massive lead in New Hampshire. For a while, Democrats were writing this off, noting Hillary’s substantial lead in national polls and the proximity of New Hampshire to Hillary’s home state. They told establishment Democrats not to panic, Bernie would fall apart after New Hampshire.
If the latest polls are to be believed, they were wrong. It’s officialy panic time:
Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has dramatically cut into the nationwide lead of primary rival Hillary Clinton, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.
The poll released Friday finds Clinton leading the race with 44 percent support, compared to 42 percent support for Sanders, within the survey’s margin of error.
The last iteration of the poll in December had Clinton leading Sanders nationwide by a 61-30 point margin.“Democrats nationwide are feeling the Bern as Sen. Bernie Sanders closes a 31-point gap to tie Secretary Hillary Clinton,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
The poll also finds that Sanders matches up better with top Republican primary candidates than Clinton.
In head-to-head matchups the Vermont senator leads GOP front-runner Donald Trump by 10 points, edges Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) by 4 points and ties Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
While Clinton still tops Trump by 5 points, she ties Cruz and trails Rubio by 7 points.
The poll also finds that Clinton has a 17-point unfavorable rating, only besting Trump in that category, who has a 25-point unfavorable rating.
Reminder: Bernie Sanders refers to himself openly as a socialist. He honeymooned in the former Soviet Union, at a time when the nation had thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at the United States. He spent his formative years apologizing for America’s enemies, and in 2016, he is one indictment away from being the Democratic nominee for president. As the Occupy hordes and environmental lunatics demanding freedom from responsibility overtake a party once dominated by Irish Catholics and hardworking socially moderate union members , one has to wonder how long it will be before they add “socialist” to the name.
