Last night, President Obama gave his last State Of The Union address. It contained all the usual big ticket Obama ideas. No new policies or proposals were announced last night.
At times, President Obama seemed to troll the presidential candidates. He criticized “calls to carpet bomb civilians” which is a reference to Ted Cruz. He also trolled Donald Trump by praising immigrants and condemning politicians who “insult Muslims.”
President Obama spent most of his speech defending his economic record. He took credit for what he called the “longest streak of private-sector job creation in history.” He also pointed out that the auto industry was having its best year ever, a reference to his bailout of that industry in 2009.
President Obama spoke at length on foreign policy. He said ISIS does not “threaten our national existence.” He dismissed them as “masses of fighters on the back of pickup trucks.” Obama also pointed out that the U.S. spends more than on its military than the next eight countries combined. He never mentioned the American sailors in Iranian custody.
The speech was generally a bunch of “meh.” It was just another Obama campaign speech in the end. It will likely be ignored by the country.
The GOP response was given by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. It seemed to be more aimed at Donald Trump than Obama. It wasn’t very specific and was also a bunch of “meh.”
