I think Bernie Sanders is having an acid flashback. That’s the only explanation for his hilarious interview on Face the Nation, where he expressed confidence that he can win over Trump voters:

At first glance, you would probably think supporters of Bernie Sanders and supporters of Donald Trump are polar opposites.

But, Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation, Sanders said he thinks he could sway Trump supporters into voting for him.

The Democratic candidate said those voters have legitimate concerns about key issues like the economy and social security that Trump is tapping into.

“Many of Trump’s supporters are working-class people and they’re angry, and they’re angry because they’re working longer hours for lower wages,” Sanders said.

Sanders is right in a sense. In many ways, his platform of closing the borders, raising wages, and ensuring good treatment of our veterans is not that dissimilar to Trump’s. But where they differ IS key to understanding why he’ll never sniff Trump voters. Trump is a uniquely American success story, an entrepreneur who is promising a restoration of the American Dream. He talks about reigniting the American entrepreneurial spirit so that hard working Americans can prosper. Sanders, meanwhile, is a communist layabout who has spent his life degrading the notion of the American dream, and fighting against everything that makes America great. Trump voters want the ability to try, they’re not looking for handouts. Moreover, Trump voters are patriotic Americans who are deeply concerned about the state of their country. Electing a communist is the last thing they would ever do.
