Give Ted Cruz some credit. He knows he’s Ned Flanders, smart and conservative, but about as cool as Pontiac Aztec on a hot day. For months, he’s recognized that his best shot was to wait until Donald Trump flamed out or lost interest, hoping that a significant portion of the disaffected grassroots who make up Trump’s base would send their votes his way. But with Trump staying solid in the polls and Cruz gaining steam on his own, Cruz has decided that he can’t wait any more. At a private meeting with donors in New York, he lit into the Donald.
Sen. Ted Cruz wants to be the conservative candidate in the Republican presidential primary, and he’s thus far been extra nice to Donald Trump, at least in public.
The New York Times is reporting that Cruz, who’s tied for second in the RealClearPolitics average of presidential polls, had some sharp criticism for Trump at a private fundraising event Wednesday in New York City.
Cruz reportedly said that he likes and respects both Trump and Ben Carson, but he doesn’t believe “either one of them is going to be our president,” adding:
“You look at Paris, you look at San Bernardino, it’s given a seriousness to this race, that people are looking for: Who is prepared to be a commander in chief? Who understands the threats we face?”
He went on: “Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button? Now that’s a question of strength, but it’s also a question of judgment. And I think that is a question that is a challenging question for both of them.”
Cruz’s criticism echoes that of Senator Rand Paul, who looked at the Donald’s inconsistency on a number of issues and expressed similar concerns. But the Donald and his supporters are not cowed. Trump commented on twitter:
Looks like @tedcruz is getting ready to attack. I am leading by so much he must. I hope so, he will fall like all others. Will be easy!
