Jeb! Bush, who is apparently still running, received an endorsement that could be strategically problematic.
Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Mississippi, is backing Jeb Bush for president, the former Florida governor’s campaign is announcing Tuesday.
The endorsement marks Bush’s fourth Senate endorsement and 30th total from a member of Congress.
“Jeb Bush is the proven leader the American people need as we face grave threats from abroad and continued economic challenges at home. Jeb is a serious leader with executive experience and a forward-looking vision,” said Cochran, who’s now in his seventh term in the Senate.
Jeb’s campaign has suffered to date because many conservatives believe that he cares more about moneyed special interests than conservative ideals, and accepting an endorsement from Cochran is no different. Cochran is the definition of the establishment. His underhanded campaign against conservative challenger Chris McDaniel alienated many grassroots conservatives, and as we reported yesterday, he spends his time on Capitol Hill trying to carve out special exemptions in United States patent law for his favored contributors. In accepting the endorsement, Jeb! is telling voters that he’ll tolerate the sort of corruption, backroom dealing, and contempt for the base that have alienated voters from the GOP. Some people never learn.
