The Department of Housing and Urban Development is trying to destroy suburbia by claiming that they’re racist and segregated. In an effort to force more “affordable housing” in the suburbs, HUD is overriding local zoning laws and requiring communities to build more “affordable housing” in mostly white neighborhoods. This is because whereas most people would see choice and economics, HUD sees racism.
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino was warning attendees to the annual ALEC States and Policy Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona of just this on Wednesday. His suburban New York county has been in a fight with HUD since 2009. Recently, a Federal appellate panel ruled that Westchester County has not engaged in housing discrimination. This is despite claims from HUD.
This summer, the Obama administration announced new fair housing rules. These rules require local governments to compile data about the race, ethnicity, class, among other factors of neighborhoods. Then they must compile data about what kind of “assets” are in those neighborhoods such as quality schools, jobs, and parks. If there are any disparities, local governments who receive HUD funding correct them, regardless of whether or not there are intentionally discriminatory policies. HUD must approve any plan.
But that’s not the only part of it. The rule requires counties to examine their housing policies compared to the metropolitan region, not just their own county. The rule opens the door for the annexation of suburban counties by the major city.
The left sees suburbs as inherently bigoted and racist. They also blame suburban flight for urban decay. The Obama administration is trying to destroy home rule and local zoning laws with these rules to promote an ideological agenda.
Congress needs to rein these rules in. More importantly, we need a new president who believes in home rule and the American dream.
