Up until recently, only political neophyte Donald Trump and so smeared “committed isolationist” Rand Paul stood to question the GOP’s broad commitment to an expanded ground war in the Middle East. A version of the plan endorsed by most presidential candidates includes a United States that couldn’t pacify Iraq waging war with Russia backed Assad, ISIS, and Iran simultaneously. Also, there would be regional allies. I forgot about that.

Anywho, until now, it was easy to dismiss Paul and Trump as kooks. So what’s changed? A man who knows more about Middle Eastern warfare than pretty much anyone essentially took their side. As Rare reports:

Former CIA Director and retired four-star general David Petraeus on Monday warned against sending American troops on a dangerous fool’s errand in Syria:

Syria “may be a Humpty Dumpty that can’t be put back together again,” retired four-star general and former CIA Director David Petraeus said in an interview aired Monday night amid a discussion about the regional complexities in the coalition fight against the Islamic State. […]

Earlier in the interview, Petraeus urged against keeping American boots on the ground as “not sustainable.”

“I would not at this point,” Petraeus said. “Again, you need to have a hold force that has legitimacy in the eyes of people that has to be Sunni Arab forces.”

Asked whether it should be American forces, Petraeus said, “it should not be.”

Those looking to lead the United States headfirst into war should probably not take Petraeus words lightly.
