Democrat candidate for Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has been shown as leading his opponent, U.S. Senator David Vitter in every poll that has been released so far in the runoff. But the latest ad that was released by the Edwards campaign makes you wonder if he actually is leading.
The ad, which questions David Vitter’s patriotism and integrity, will be aired statewide in Louisiana starting during the LSU-Alabama rivalry college football game. The ad will be aired throughout the next week, during Louisiana’s early voting period.
The Vitter campaign had a harsh response to the ad. Retired U.S. Army Colonel Evans Spiceland, who is the chairman of Veterans for Vitter responded to the ad with the following statement:
“As a veteran, I think it’s disgusting that John Bel Edwards is using veteran’s grave stones in a gutter political attack ad. This is a disgrace to those of us who actually live by the honor code.”
Edwards was a graduate of West Point and served in the U.S. Army before returning to Louisiana to practice law. He has been running his campaign focused on his so-called integrity.
Frequently during the Bush administration, Democrats accused Republicans of “questioning their patriotism” when they were challenged for their opposition to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Such charges were often overboard.
Early voting begins in Louisiana on Saturday November 7th and continues through November 14th. Election day itself is on November 21st.
