The pro-Ted Cruz Courageous Conservatives PAC released a new radio in Iowa touting Ted Cruz over Marco Rubio. The radio ad was cut because in the words of Rick Shaftan, the consultant behind the Courageous Conservatives PAC, the other pro-Cruz spots being ran were “boring.”
While Rubio was the target of the attacks, which focused on his lack of accomplishments, another Senator was angered by the ad. Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy was angry at a line in the ad. The ad said that “after Sandy Hook, Ted Cruz stopped Obama’s push for new gun control laws.”
Murphy issued a statement denouncing it reports the Hartford Courant.
Sen Chris Murphy said a third-party ad supporting Sen. Ted Cruz’s White House bid “makes me want to throw up” because it said the GOP presidential candidate “stopped Obama’s push for gun control laws” in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings.
“If Ted Cruz wants to brandish his pro-gun credentials to Republican primary voters, that’s his right,” Murphy said in a scorching statement. “But it’s sick that he thinks he’ll win votes by specifically pointing out that in the wake of 20 dead first-graders, he was the face of the fight to ensure no action was taken to stop more deranged killers from walking into elementary schools with military-style assault weapons loaded with 30-round clips of ammunition.”
Instead of asking for an apology from Cruz, Senator Murphy should apologize for demonizing law-abiding gun owners. Murphy should also apologize for exploiting the Sandy Hook shootings for political gain.
According to the most recent FBI data, only 323 murders were committed with rifles of all types in the U.S. There is no available breakdown by types of rifles.
