The Obama Administration and its tree hugging left wing allies just scored a major victory over Americans looking for work and cheap energy. They Keystone pipeline project has been shut down.
While Canada’s new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been called the country’s environmental savior by some, there’s one decidedly non-green policy he’s yet to shake: his long-standing support for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. But with approval of the project facing growing doubts in the U.S., both Trudeau and the company behind the pipeline are taking a new tack: running out the clock.
TransCanada this week asked the U.S. Department of State to suspend its evaluation of the pipeline to bring oil from Alberta’s oil sands to the U.S. Gulf Coast (the White House quickly shot down the idea of a suspension). And Trudeau, who was sworn in Wednesday, has largely gone quiet on the subject. But what looks like a strategy to play for time could be aimed at a simple political reality: President Obama is increasingly expected to reject the project, and its supporters are hoping for a more friendly face in the White House after the 2016 election.
They Keystone project would have created thousands of new jobs and expanded access to affordable energy to all Americans. Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu lost her job to because of her opposition to Keystone, and before the runoff altered her position dramatically in hopes of staving off unemployment. President Obama was expected to give the project a no due to environmental concerns. Which ones? None. There is no empirical evidence that the Keystone pipeline would be any sort of major environmental risk. The issue is that would expand cheap access to traditional energy sources that the Obama Administration doesn’t like. They’d prefer to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on windmills and solar panels while Americans struggling in the Obama economy are forced to put more and more of their meager budgets towards energy.
So now, it appears that the project is on hold until President Obama is out of office. Americans looking for affordable energy and quality jobs should start counting the days.
