In the wake of Kevin McCarthy’s exit from the race, the Republican party is at odds over who to nominate as the next speaker. Conservatives in the Freedom Caucus have thrown their support behind Daniel Webster, and many in the grassroots would like the party to draft Trey Gowdy, the principled South Carolina Congressman who heads up the Benghazi Select Committee. The idea is that conservatives nominate someone who can bring together the moderate and conservative elements of the party and move forward a true conservative agenda.
For many, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan seemed like the likely choice. But for some conservative groups, he’s unacceptable. As Kelly Cohen reports:
Rep. Paul Ryan has so far deflected calls to be the next House speaker, but there is already a group of conservatives ready to kick him out that job.Several right-leaning organizations have formed a new coalition called “Fire Paul Ryan,” calling the Wisconsin Republican a RINO, or a Republican In Name Only.
“We forced Boehner to step down. Cantor was defeated. McCarthy withdrew … and yet the establishment keeps pushing RINO after RINO after RINO. If Ryan is chosen, we’ll see that he’s fired. Add your name to the list of Americans who Demand a Conservative Speaker,” said the coalition’s website FirePaulRyan.com, which is paid for by the Constitutional Rights PAC.
Ryan is well liked by his colleagues, but he’s taken heat from many conservative groups for his support of amnesty. Conservative entertainers Mark Levin, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity have all said that Ryan would be unacceptable as Speaker.
