In 2018, President Trump signed the First Step Act into law. The groundbreaking criminal justice reform law enacts reforms that make our justice system fairer and help former inmates return to society.

The First Step Act reforms addressed inequities in sentencing laws that disproportionately harm people of color and low-income Americans — the law reforms cruel and ineffective mandatory minimum sentences.

The First Step Act provides rehabilitative programs to inmates who served their time, helping them rejoin society instead of ostracizing them, thereby increasing the likelihood of recidivism.

President Trump even received the Bipartisan Justice Award courtesy of Benedict College in South Carolina, a historically black college, for his criminal justice reform accomplishments.
