10:30 PM September 11th: Ambassador Stevens and the other Americans in the main compound’s safe haven are overwhelmed but safe – for the moment.
Things change when the compound is set ablaze by terrorist insurgents. Stevens and the others, notably Sean Smith, move to a nearby bathroom before deciding to flee into the night.
Stevens’ bodyguard, Diplomatic Special Agent Scott Strickland exits through a window, but neither Stevens nor Smith follows. Overcome by smoke, Strickland cannot find either man.
More Diplomatic Security Service agents arrive to rescue the besieged Americans. They successfully retake the consulate and find Smith’s body.
The search for the ambassador has just begun.
