William Harvey Carney was the first African-American to receive the Medal of Honor. Carney was a former slave that escaped and joined the Union Army. During the Union attack on Fort Wagner, the flag bearer was killed, Carney grabbed the flag and carried it all the way through till the end. For his bravery, he was given the Medal of Honor.
